For Talk Like a Pirate Day, I wore my Napster t-shirt.

Perhaps it was too subtle. Most people didn’t get it.

In order to celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day and our new house, we are going to have a Talk Like a Pirate Open House party-like thing tomorrow. I’d like to open up the invitation to all of my loyal blog readers. So give a shout out (comment) if you want to come.

Just like Magic

Saw this on Slashdot:

Software is better than just that. It’s a miracle commodity:

It’s copyrightable like a book.
It’s patentable like a mouse trap.
It can hold trade secrets, like a glass of Coca Cola.
The consumer has to “sign” a contract to use it, like a cellphone account.
Advertising pitches can be included for a captive audience, just like a movie theater.
It’s artificially expensive, like a diamond.
It’s a recurring source of support revenue, like a lawn service.
It’s creator can disavow all liability for anything that may go wrong, and get away with it, like… I can’t think of anything else like that!

Amazing.

DRM? What

I just made my first few purchases from the iTunes music store:

  • Crazy Train (live)
  • Ring of Fire (by Johnny Cash, covered by Social Distortion
  • Rock around the Clock
  • Smoke on the Water (live)
  • I thought you were my Boyfriend Single by the Magnetic Fields (3 songs: 49 cents!)
  • Float on by Modest Mouse

Of course, I immediately burned it to CD and re-ripped it as MP3. Screw fidelity—it’s security I care most about. No way I’m trusting my purchases to a format I ultimately have no control over.

Despite that one minor inconvenience, overall a superb experience.

I have a feeling this could get addictive.
